How Our Piano Lessons in Puerto Rico are Different

We Don’t Expect Children To Remain Self-Motivated

Kids don’t often want to practice piano on their own, and parents may become frustrated while convincing them to do scales, theory, and practice their pieces of music. Piano can often become just another chore.

At PIANOFORTE we have a NEW approach to piano lessons that focuses on making playing a natural habit.

Our unique FORTE methodology makes it easier for your child to engage and understand music faster, while also being flexible enough to not disrupt family schedules. Our pedagogy is focused on micro-learning concepts during lessons.

Our conservatory-quality programs are created to help your child learn everything they need during class, taking the pressure off daily practice for you as a parent.

We Take Adults’ Busy Schedules Into Consideration

Many people come to us for adult piano lessons in Puerto Rico, and we love working with them.

Our program is designed with your busy schedule in mind. Whether you are working full time or semi-retired, we understand  time is your most valuable asset, which is why we've created a program that maximizes efficiency by focusing on in-class instruction. Our curriculum is tailored to help you achieve your musical goals quickly and effectively, without the burden of excessive homework.

We structure a practice and support plan around your schedule and the amount of time you can commit to.

Multiple Recital Opportunities At Beautiful Locations

Every year, we offer multiple opportunities for our students to perform and meet one another at recitals. We book beautiful locations like the concert hall Guillermo y Bertita L. Martinez

at the Conservatorio de Música in Miramar and create a professional environment for our students to showcase what they’ve learned. We also help our students prepare specifically for these recitals – we work on memorization, musical interpretation, performance skills, and more.

Meet Your Piano Teacher in Puerto Rico, Lucía Fernández

Lucía Fernández, a piano educator with over two decades of experience, enjoys helping kids, teens, and adults learn the piano in Puerto Rico. She earned degrees in piano performance and pedagogy from Missouri Western State University, and she has taught hundreds of students privately and in schools. She is one of PR’s leading bilingual instructors, and she has worked with students in the US, Mexico, and here in Puerto Rico.

A mother herself, Lucía has seen firsthand the impact that music instruction has on pre-college students. She believes in helping kids find fulfillment in piano, even when private education continues to slash time and resources for the arts. What Musical Skills Do Our Piano Students Learn?

Note Reading and Sight Reading

The cornerstone of confident piano playing is reading music. We often start with landmark notes like C, F, and G, and develop five finger patterns from there. Our students learn to read music in the bass and treble clefs, identify accidentals like sharps and flats, and more. Additionally, we place an emphasis on sight reading. Sight reading exercises are part of our curriculum, and we will continue to develop this skill as students progress.

Technique That Lasts a Lifetime

From day one, we teach students how to play with correct technique. This is extremely important, as bad technique can lead to:

  • Tension in the body

  • Carpal Tunnel and other kinds of pain

  • The inability to play with speed as a student’s abilities increase

  • A lack of expressiveness and tone at the piano

  • And more

We will teach correct posture, breathing (yes, even for pianists), hand position, finger technique, wrist rotation, and much more.

Practice Skills and Independence

The ultimate goal is for a student to become an independent musician who can choose music, interpret it, and learn it in a structured way without anyone’s help. To that end, we teach our students how to practice music and memorize it. We will introduce practice drills, teach how to approach a challenging piece of music, and explain strategies for learning and memorizing even the most complicated patterns. From Prokofiev sonatas to Chopin Nocturnes, every piece of music can be broken down into accessible sections.

Performance Skills

Have you ever wondered how world class pianists like Martha Argerich or Evgeny Kissin can play a concerto from memory in front of 1,000 people without any errors or mental slips? It is truly amazing, and we teach performance skills at our studio. We teach our students how to practice a piece of music in a lasting way, how to memorize it through different strategies (employing visual, aural, and other memorization techniques), how to test memory to make sure it’s secure, and much more. We can even set up opportunities for our students to do a “practice performance” before each recital.

Music Theory

Students in our conservatory-like environment learn to identify key signatures, time signatures, relative majors and minors, modes, scale degrees, and much more. This not only enables students to excel in college music courses, but it also allows them to better understand and enjoy music.

Repertoire Selection and Interpretation

As pianists advance, we help them learn how to pick ideal pieces of music for recitals, auditions, and personal development. We will also teach them how to study it right from the beginning, create a structured practice strategy, and interpret the notes on the page.

“My son looks forward to his lesson and plays without being asked!”
